Merlin Entertainments - Oceanarium 2
OC2 is a specially, fabricated steel barge with a superstructure above barge deck level which was fabricated circa 30 years ago. This barge (along with others) is permanently moored within the SEA LIFE complex and is now landlocked, making the removal of the barges to dry dock for inspection and repair impossible due to surrounding structures.
Due to the steel structure and its location in a marine environment, there were ongoing corruption issues with OC2, such as damage in the viewing tunnels, cracks in the concrete, various levels of corrosion, and general de-lamination in the area. The condition of OC2 was at a stage where the entire oceanarium needed to be drained to enable a full refurbishment.
DJC has assisted (over a two-year period) with Board feasibility studies, overseeing detailed concept and design plans to ensure capital expenditure. It has involved detailed review of the scope to ensure thorough review and accurate forecasting for a smooth construction phase.
Works included:
– Life Support System upgrades and relocation to meet environmental and operational standards.
– Addressing critical repairs and replacements to maintain the facility’s structural integrity and longevity.
– Market Research and Themebook Development to guide future theming works.
– Services Upgrades to improve fire, electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems to meet regulatory and operational requirements.
